Norma is one of the last traditional families in the art of Hand Made Grass Mats, bags and baskets that are Eco friendly.
The art of hand plaiting grass has been in the family from the 1970s. The family used the dried grass to plait into baskets, mats, etc., to sell at Kingstown Market. The grass that is used is what we call the Razor Grass. It is cut and left to dry in the sun for two weeks. It is then plaited into long plaits. The plaits are sown with a needle and Coppio Grass. The Coppio Grass is used when it is dried and then separated into threads to fit through the needle. The grass plaits are then sown together to make mats, bags and baskets.
Made from vincy local grass
